Bachelor and Masters

Like most university studies, Psychology consists of a bachelor and a master. Below is a brief summary of what the program looks like.
In the bachelor psychology you will learn about the behavior of people in the most general sense. This gives you answers to the following questions: Why do people help a person in need less quickly in a busy environment? Why can’t people talk after a (specific) brain haemorrhage? What are the forms of depression and how do you make a diagnosis? The bachelor is divided over three years.
Bachelor year 1 (Propaedeutic year)
The bachelor phase of psychology lasts for three years. The first year is a general introduction to psychology, in which all aspects of psychology are highlighted. You will have the courses ‘Social Psychology’, ‘Cognitive Psychology’, ‘Clinical and Biological Psychology’ and ‘Work and Organisational Psychology’.
Bachelor year 2
The second year is more focused on research. During this year you will follow a number of courses such as ‘Scientific and Statistical Reasoning’, ‘Psychological Communication’, ‘Psychological Research’ and ‘Fundamentals of Psychology’. In the second semester you will choose one of the seven specialisations.
Bachelor year 3
The third year starts with finishing your specialisation, where you follow the specialisation’s courses and finish your bachelor-thesis. In the second semester you can either pick a Minor or a second specialisation.
For more information, see the study guide (link to the study guide is added).
Master
There are different masters, most of which are directly related to the direction you have chosen in the second year. These masters are a one-year track and consist of a number of courses, an internship and a thesis. There are also a few two-year masters including the research masters, which are in English and focused on research.

Ombusstudent
You may have a great idea for improving the course you are taking or the programme's rules and regulations. You might find yourself in situations where you don't agree with something or are unhappy about, such as an assessment or your (thesis)supervision. Or maybe you're struggling with your studies and don't know what to do about it.
If you are unsure how to deal with the situation or don't know where to start, I'm here to help as the Ombudsstudent. I'm the go-to person for students with complaints, questions, or ideas. I'm here to listen, as well as to help you find possible solutions.
You can reach out to me through Canvas or send an email to psyombudsstudent-fmg@uva.nl to schedule a meeting or seek advice. The information that you share will, of course, be treated in strict confidence. The sooner we address the issue, the better chance we have of finding a solution; so don't hesitate to reach out! You're always welcome.
